10 separate projects address crucial traffic safety issues for the safety of road users in California.

(Berkeley, Calif., January 4, 2019) – The Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (UCB SafeTREC) announced today 10 grants for 2018-19 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support crucial traffic safety programs.

UC Berkeley SafeTREC is excited to release the 2018 California Statewide Public Opinion Traffic Study led by Ewald & Wasserman Research Consultants (E&W). This study was conducted on behalf of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) at the University of California, Berkeley.

SafeTREC staff and graduate students are excited to participate in the upcoming Transportation Research Board 98th Annual Meeting from January 13-17, 2019 in Washington, D.C. This year they are expecting to have more than 13,000 transportation professionals attending from around the world. A number of sessions and workshops will focus on the spotlight theme for the 2019 meeting: Transportation for a Smart, Sustainable, and Equitable Future.

SafeTREC is offering free Complete Streets Safety Assessments (CSSA) to California local agencies with a population of over 25,000 people. CSSAs are comprehensive transportation safety assessments that focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety. They help local agencies identify and implement traffic safety solutions that lead to improved safety for all users of California’s roadways.

Sarah Doggett is getting her Master of Urban Planning and Civil Engineering at UC Berkeley. She is from Newark, Delaware and moved to California in 2016. She is a Graduate Student Researcher at SafeTREC, and is working on a project around senior mobility in Contra Costa County.

We are excited to share news of another successful year delivering the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) Program in partnership with California Walks and local residents, agencies, and safety advocates in communities throughout California! We are continually inspired by and grateful for the work being done to create conditions for safer, more accessible and enjoyable walking and biking in their neighborhoods.

As part of our Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP), UC Berkeley SafeTREC has prepared a series of research briefs about the Safe Systems Approach to road safety. These research briefs support local advocacy, community, and agency partner efforts to engage and educate residents on pedestrian and bicycle safety.

During the California-wide PedsCount! Summit 2018, we launched Street Story, SafeTREC’s new community engagement platform that allows residents, community groups and agencies to collect information about transportation collisions, near-misses, general hazards and safe locations to travel.

As part of our education and professional development activities for the Collaborative Sciences Center for Road Safety (CSCRS), we're excited to announce the recipients of our 2018 CSCRS Road Safety Graduate Student Fellowships for this fall semester! This year's five awardees were from four different academic departments and submitted excellent applications for a wide range of student-initiated research projects.
