UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) is excited to announce the release of the 2024 series of Traffic Safety Facts, which feature traffic safety data and trends at the national and state level on a variety of road safety topics. We encourage our readers to learn more about the Safe System approach to road safety for policies that these fact sheets may inform.
This series uses crash data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). FARS provides data on fatal traffic crashes within the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. SWITRS consists of motor vehicle crash data collected and maintained by the California Highway Patrol.
Please find the 12 program areas below along with the 2024 Traffic Safety Facts data dictionary. The program areas are a result of the California Highway Safety Plan 2024 - 2026 along with two additional program areas designed to address driver and officer education along with preventing roadside deaths.
Note: The drug-involved driving factsheet was not updated for 2024 due to a change in the methodology used in drug toxicology methodology. For more information, please see the Fatality Analysis Reporting System Analytical User’s Manual 1975 - 2022. Please refer to the 2023 version of the factsheet in order to learn more about drug-involved driving.
