California's Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) Crash Data Dashboard now provides access to tribal crash data
UC Berkeley SafeTREC's geocoding team recently worked in collaboration with the Native American Advisory Committee (NAAC) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to provide access to tribal crash data on the Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) Crash Data Dashboard. The tabs of the SHSP Crash Data Dashboard now allow all data to be filtered by whether a fatal or serious injury crash was within 5 miles of a tribal boundary.

According to the latest traffic safety data from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 42,915 traffic fatalities in 2021, a 10.5% increase from 2020. This alarming trend was also seen for those walking and biking in our communities, with 7,342 pedestrian fatalities (a 13% increase from 2020) and 985 bicyclist/pedalcyclist fatalities (a 5% increase from 2020) in 2021. These deaths are unacceptable and preventable.

UC Berkeley SafeTREC is excited to share the new Safe System Strategies for Bicyclists and Pedestrians Toolkit, which provides a starting point for anyone looking to plan a bikeable and walkable community. It lists potential community improvements that can help create a safer community with the Safe System Approach.

On Tuesday, June 14, 2022 the California Senate Committee on Transportation held a hearing to discuss a series of measures around pedestrian and bicycle safety, public transportation, transportation planning and funding, and more. As part of the proceedings, SafeTREC Co-Director Offer Grembek provided expert testimony for AB 1909, the Bicycle Omnibus Bill.

New paper highlights a framework to identify traffic conflicts
Former SafeTREC Graduate Student Researcher and current Applied Scientist at Amazon Jiajian Lu has co-authored a new publication, "Learning the representation of surrogate safety measures to identify traffic conflict" with SafeTREC Co-Director Offer Grembek and Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Mark Hansen in the journal Accident Analysis & Prevention.

This study was conducted on behalf of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) at the University of California, Berkeley.
