Welcome back to the SafeTREC Spotlight Series! Each month, we highlight a SafeTREC team member and share their stories, work and interest in the transportation and safety research realm. In today's post, meet Praveen Vayalamkuzhi, SafeTREC postdoctoral researcher.

Pedestrians and bicyclists make up a disproportionate share of road deaths and injuries, and low-income, majority person-of-color communities tend to face the greatest danger.

According to the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 37,133 traffic fatalities on U.S. roadways in 2017, a 1.8-percent decrease from the 37,806 people killed in 2016. While there has been a general downward trend downward in traffic fatalities overall, this is still an alarmingly high number of deaths – and there have been troubling increases for vulnerable road users like pedestrians.

Join SafeTREC and the Safe Routes Partnership on Friday, June 14 at King Middle School in San Bernardino for the first Safe Routes to School Launch Workshop of 2019! During this workshop you will hear about ways to make walking and rolling to and from school safer, convenient and fun.

From May 14-16, 2019 tribal, federal, state, and industry leaders from across the United States who are working on the tribal transportation issues and challenges gathered in San Diego, California for the National Tribal Symposium to Advance Transportation.

Register now for one of our Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) workshops coming up in Boyle Heights and Muscoy to identify priorities to make walking and biking safer for everyone - including seniors, students, parents, and people with disabilities. These workshops train neighborhood residents and health, transportation and safety advocates on how to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety to make California communities safer and more pleasant to walk and bike.

Speed is a significant risk factor in road safety. Several recent reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) highlight the need for a greater focus on speed management at the national, state and local level.

SafeTREC postdoctural researcher Aditya Medury has co-authored a newly published paper, "Pedestrian Count Expansion Methods: Bridging the Gap between Land Use Groups and Empirical Clusters" with researchers Julia B. Griswold, Louis Huang and Offer Grembek in the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board.

New Paper Published by SafeTREC Researcher Julia Griswold

SafeTREC researcher Julia B. Griswold has co-authored a newly published paper, "A Pedestrian Exposure Model for the California State Highway System" with researchers Aditya Medury, Robert J. Schneider, Dave Amos, Ang Li and Offer Grembek in the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board.
