This year, we will partner with communities across California to discuss, plan, and implement active transportation safety improvements and projects. We will work with each community to identify how a pedestrian and bicycle safety workshop fits into their current needs and goals, especially as pedestrian deaths reached a 40-year high nationally in 2022.

The CPBSP is comprised of the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) and Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) programs. Each program works with local residents, schools, agencies, and other safety partners to develop a community-driven action plan to improve walking and biking safety. Both programs use an adapted Safe System approach that engages communities as the experts and strengthens collaboration between transportation professionals and communities to create lasting traffic safety and mobility improvements.

CPBSP programs strive for equitable engagement and accessibility. Program staff will work with local communities to determine if workshops will be offered in-person or online, pursuant to public health guidance.

Which program is right for me

The CPBST is our original pedestrian and bicycle safety training, and features a Safe System overview, walk/bike assessment, crash data review, and action planning activity. This training curriculum has been presented in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. Interpretation and translation is available as requested in these languages and more.

The CAyS program is our Spanish-language pedestrian and bicycle safety training that provides a culturally and linguistically competent curriculum to the communities we work alongside. In addition to the CPBST curriculum, CAyS also includes a RadioNovela activity and meetings to support communities as they engage with active transportation advocacy work.

Interested in bringing a workshop to your community?

We are currently seeking 8 new communities to partner with us to make their communities safer for walking and biking. We prioritize working in communities that are at higher risk for road traffic injuries and addressing the safety needs of people who are underserved by traditional transportation planning and resources.

Applications are available now and you can apply in both English and Spanish. For early consideration, please apply by January 19, 2024. Applications will be open until all slots are filled.

UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks are happy to announce follow-up technical assistance support for past Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) and the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) communities.

Peer Exchange Series: My community is eager to collaborate and grow! Where do we go from here?

We are excited to once again host our virtual three-part Peer Exchange Series in the new year! The series supports communities as they work to implement pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety programming and improvements.

Over the course of the three webinars, we will facilitate conversations on how former CPBST and CAyS participants have mobilized and grown community interest in active transportation. The first two sessions, Building a Collaborative and Equitable Transportation Vision with Decision-Makers, will be facilitated in English (Tuesday, February 13, 2024) and Spanish (Tuesday, February 27, 2024 ). We will discuss the different strategies employed by transportation advocates to advance active transportation projects that promote safety for people walking, rolling, or biking in the community. In the third session, Cultivating Youth Leadership in Transportation Spaces (Tuesday, March 12, 2024), we center on the strategies needed to include and strengthen youth voices and collaboration in active transportation advocacy.

We invite CPBST and CAyS participants from the past few years to join us at the Peer Exchanges to share their successes and challenges, and learn about best practices from their peers and colleagues.

Register now for the first Peer Exchange in 2024!
We look forward to seeing you in the new year at our first Peer Exchange on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Building a Collaborative and Equitable Transportation Vision with Decision-Makers. Learn more and register here.

If you require an accommodation for effective communication (ASL interpreting/ CART captioning) to fully participate in this event, please contact our Access Coordinator Lisa Peterson at lisapeterson@berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible and at least 7-10 days in advance of the event.

The Peer Exchange Series will be conducted over Zoom. Attendees will receive a Zoom link a week before the event.

Technical Assistance Program

Follow-up support is available to all former CPBST and CAyS sites to support their community’s implementation of programs, projects, and recommendations outlined in their community action plan. This year, we will partner with communities in two overarching areas: strengthening data-driven narratives and community leadership and capacity strengthening.

We are currently seeking five communities to partner with us. To inquire about follow-up support, please contact us at cpbst@berkeley.edu.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
