UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks are excited to announce applications are now being accepted for our 2024 Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP)!
This year, we will partner with communities across California to discuss, plan, and implement active transportation safety improvements and projects. We will work with each community to identify how a pedestrian and bicycle safety workshop fits into their current needs and goals, especially as pedestrian deaths reached a 40-year high nationally in 2022.
About the programs
The CPBSP is comprised of the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) and Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) programs. Each program works with local residents, schools, agencies, and other safety partners to develop a community-driven action plan to improve walking and biking safety. Both programs use an adapted Safe System approach that engages communities as the experts and strengthens collaboration between transportation professionals and communities to create lasting traffic safety and mobility improvements.
CPBSP programs strive for equitable engagement and accessibility. Program staff will work with local communities to determine if workshops will be offered in-person or online, pursuant to public health guidance.
Which program is right for me
The CPBST is our original pedestrian and bicycle safety training, and features a Safe System overview, walk/bike assessment, crash data review, and action planning activity. This training curriculum has been presented in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. Interpretation and translation is available as requested in these languages and more.
The CAyS program is our Spanish-language pedestrian and bicycle safety training that provides a culturally and linguistically competent curriculum to the communities we work alongside. In addition to the CPBST curriculum, CAyS also includes a RadioNovela activity and meetings to support communities as they engage with active transportation advocacy work.
Interested in bringing a workshop to your community?
We are currently seeking 8 new communities to partner with us to make their communities safer for walking and biking. We prioritize working in communities that are at higher risk for road traffic injuries and addressing the safety needs of people who are underserved by traditional transportation planning and resources.
Applications are available now and you can apply in both English and Spanish. For early consideration, please apply by January 19, 2024. Applications will be open until all slots are filled.
