The UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) is excited to announce that applications are now being accepted for our 2025 Complete Streets Safety Assessment (CSSA) programs, in partnership with California Walks!

This fall, the UC Berkeley student chapter of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the Cal Transportation Team hosted the 2024 Interdistrict Transportation Competition (ITC) a conference intended to be a space for students to "engage in various transportation-related challenges often seen in the professional world, including in fields like planning, design, and data analysis." While the overall number of motor vehicle fatalities and serious injuries have generally decreased in recent years, vulnerable road user fatalities and serious injuries continue to rise (National Center for Statistics and Analysis, 2024). Public health professionals, their methods, and their models are essential to incorporate within active transportation best practices because it allows decision makers to capture the ideas, desires, and needs of communities.

This year, the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program (CPBSP) partnered with 8 new communities and 5 previous communities to help advance their pedestrian and bicycle safety goals: Altadena, Bakersfield, El Sereno, Jurupa Valley, Kingsburg, Knights Landing, Lamont, Orange Cove, Oxnard, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Tulare.

Public health safety concerns surrounding road use in the United States are prevalent, with the number of fatalities and serious injury crashes for those walking, biking, and rolling continuing to reach all-time highs. These burdens are also disproportionately felt by the most vulnerable road users, especially those in low-income and BIPOC communities.

ITS Berkeley Awards 7 STRP Projects

In August, 2024 the UC Berkeley Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS) awarded seven new research proposals, totaling $595,000 through the Statewide Transportation Research Program (STRP) funded by the State of California through the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 (Senate Bill 1). Two of the proposals were awarded to SafeTREC Director Julia Griswold:
