Street Story, a free-to-use community engagement platform developed and maintained by UC Berkeley SafeTREC, now features a toggle button that allows users to view crowdsourced transportation data from the platform alongside statewide crash data from the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS)
Available in English and Spanish, Street Story features a survey where people can share their travel experiences, including anonymously reporting crashes, near misses, and places they feel safe or unsafe in their community. Once a record has been submitted, the information is publicly accessible with maps and tables that can be downloaded. The platform allows residents, community groups, and agencies to collect information about transportation crashes, near misses, general hazards, and safe locations to travel.
Street Story data can now be viewed alongside SWITRS data to compare travel experiences shared by community members and residents to fatal and serious injury crash data that has been collected by the California Highway Patrol. To use this feature:
-
Navigate to the Street Story Reports webpage and use the map to zoom into the desired focus area.
-
Toggle the bar that vertically spans the map to view Street Story data to the left and SWITRS data to the right.
-
By default, SWITRS data points are shown as clusters on the right side map. Use the "Disable Clustering" button in the lower left corner to show data as individual points. Click on "Enable Clustering" to turn on the clustering feature. Use the first button in the upper right corner of the map to change the basemap.
Funding for Street Story is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
