Making intersections safer with I2V communication

2019

Intersections are hazardous places. Threats arise from interactions among pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles, more complicated vehicle trajectories in the absence of lane markings, phases that prevent determining who has the right of way, invisible vehicle approaches, vehicle obstructions, and illegal movements. These challenges are not fully addressed by the “road diet” and road redesign prescribed in Vision Zero plans, nor will they be completely overcome by autonomous vehicles with their many sensors and tireless attention to surroundings. Accidents can also occur because drivers,...

New Publication: How effective are community pedestrian safety training workshops?

January 29, 2019

We are proud to announce that SafeTREC researchers and staff co-authored a study for the March 2019 Journal of Transport and Health titled, “How effective are community pedestrian safety training workshops? Short-term findings from a program in California”. The paper, written by Jesus Barajas, Kate Beck, Jill Cooper, Ana Lopez and Amanda Reynosa, assesses the efficacy of SafeTREC’s Community Pedestrian Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) program using a process and outcome...

New Publication: Diffusing innovative road safety practice

February 1, 2019

As another month begins, we are excited to announce another SafeTREC publication!

SafeTREC co-director Jill Cooper has co-authored a study published in the Journal of Traffic Injury Prevention, titled “Diffusing innovative road safety practice: A social network approach to identifying opinion leading U.S. cities” with University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers Seth LaJeunesse, Stephen Heiny, Kelly Evenson, and Lisa Fiedler. The study, funded by the...

Diffusing innovative road safety practice: A social network approach to identifying opinion leading U.S. cities

Evenson, Kelly R.
Fiedler, Lisa M.
Cooper, Jill F.
2019

Objective: This study sought to identify opinion-leading U.S. cities in the realm of safe transportation systems by surveying road safety professionals and asking them to identify places that served as models for road safety.

Methods: Using a purposive sampling methodology, we surveyed professionals employed in road safety–related professions (e.g., transportation engineering, planning, public health, law enforcement, and emergency response). Using 183 professionals’ complete responses, we carried out social network analysis to both describe the...

How effective are community pedestrian safety training workshops? Short-term findings from a program in California

Beck, Kate M.
Cooper, Jill F.
Lopez, Ana
Reynosa, Amanda
2019

Introduction: Pedestrians and bicyclists make up a disproportionate share of road deaths and injuries, and low-income, majority person-of-color communities tend to face the greatest danger. Comprehensive pedestrian safety programs targeted toward such communities have the potential to build communities’ capacity to address safety issues, but there is a lack of systematic research and evaluation on how effective these programs are.

Methods: We use a mixed-methods approach of surveys, participant observation, and follow-up interviews to evaluate a...

Introducing an Intelligent Intersection

2018

This project seeks to remove one important cause of intersection accidents: drivers, pedestrians and cyclists make mistakes because they lack sufficient information about the movement of others as they proceed through an intersection. There is spatial and temporal uncertainty. This missing information can be supplied by an ‘intelligent intersection’. It describes the signal from all approaches; predicts when the signal phase will change; uses sensor data to determine which blind spots are occupied; and predicts red light violations before they occur. The intelligent intersection broadcasts...
