Strengthening Partnerships: A 2022 Peer Exchange Series for former CPBST sites

UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) and California Walks are excited to announce a new 3-part training series, the “Strengthening Partnerships: A Peer Exchange Series for former CPBST sites” which will start on March 15, 2022. The biweekly virtual series is designed to support communities as they work to implement the recommendations developed during their Community and Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety (CPBST) workshops.

During each 90-minute peer exchange, participants will be introduced to the topic, network with peers, and learn about the successes and challenges of communities as they work to make walking and biking safer. Please join us in this unique opportunity to discuss relationship strategies for crowdsourced data, innovative infrastructure solutions, and working in unincorporated communities.

Registration is open to participants from prior CPBST sites and is free of charge but limited to 30 participants per peer exchange. A brief summary of each peer exchange will be available about one month after the event.

Using Crowdsourced Data Strategies in Community Engagement

Tuesday, March 15 from 2-3:30pm

In order for communities to be successful in conducting transportation planning efforts, the right tools and resources are needed. Crowdsourced data collection tools can help promote effective engagement among residents, local agencies and organizations. These tools can be used to gather information from large groups and provide deeper understanding of a community’s concerns than crash data alone. Crowdsourced data can be used alongside other data sources to strengthen partnerships and inform policy and street design changes. Join SafeTREC, Cal Walks, and communities across California to learn more about crowdsourcing strategies and hear success stories from communities about how they have used PhotoVoice, VideoVoice, Street Story, and more.

Upcoming Peer Exchange Sessions

March 29: Relationship Building for Temporary Demonstrations and Quick-Build Projects

Tuesday, March 29 | 2 - 3:30pm |

Temporary demonstrations and quick-build projects provide tangible, on-the-ground examples of life-saving street safety projects. They are also quick to install and cost-effective compared to typical street infrastructure projects. But, they are often slowed down due to community groups' challenges with navigating city bureaucracy and learning how to build relationships with their decision makers. For quick-builds especially, which may take changes to city and county transportation codes, it is often hard for those organizing in the community to win over their decision makers. Join SafeTREC, Cal Walks and communities across California for a chance to learn tips and tricks to building strong, lasting relationships with decision makers to get temporary demonstrations and quick-build projects in the ground.

April 12: Active Transportation Planning in Unincorporated Communities

Tuesday, April 12 | 2 - 3:30pm |

Unincorporated areas face unique challenges and complexities in active transportation planning. The discussion will focus on sources of funding for planning and improvements - counties, regional planning organizations, and state agencies - and strategies on working with each of these sources. Practitioners and community members from unincorporated areas will share their experiences and solutions. Join SafeTREC, Cal Walks and communities across California to discuss active transportation improvement efforts in unincorporated areas.

If you require an accommodation for effective communication (ASL interpreting/CART captioning, alternative media formats, etc.) to fully participate in this event, please contact Lisa Peterson at lisapeterson@berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible and at least 7-10 days in advance of the event.

If you have any questions, please email Katherine Chen at kchen@berkeley.edu

About the CPBST

The Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training Program (CPBST) is a joint project of UC Berkeley SafeTREC and California Walks. The CPBST program works with local residents and health, transportation and safety advocates to understand a community’s walking and biking safety concerns and advance their pedestrian and bicycle safety goals. We work to strengthen collaboration between all safety partners, discuss transportation safety information and local crash data, and collectively develop a community-driven safety action plan.  Our team works with a local Planning Committee to customize the workshop to fit the unique needs of each community. Learn more here.

The CPBST peer exchanges are supported by funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
