Apply now for a 2023 Complete Streets Safety Assessment in your community

October 24, 2022

SafeTREC is offering free Complete Streets Safety Assessments (CSSAs) to 16 California communities, including cities, counties, and school campuses with a population of over 2,500 people. CSSAs are comprehensive transportation safety assessments that focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety. They help local agencies identify and implement traffic safety solutions that lead to improved safety for all users of California’s roadways.

Impact of the Community Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Training Program: Insights from the 2022 Follow-Up Survey

July 29, 2022

According to the latest traffic safety data from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 42,915 traffic fatalities in 2021, a 10.5% increase from 2020. This alarming trend was also seen for those walking and biking in our communities, with 7,342 pedestrian fatalities (a 13% increase from 2020) and 985 bicyclist/pedalcyclist fatalities (a 5% increase from 2020) in 2021. These deaths are unacceptable and preventable. Ensuring that our communities are safe for...

NEW: Safe System Strategies for Bicyclists and Pedestrians Toolkit

July 5, 2022

UC Berkeley SafeTREC is excited to share the new Safe System Strategies for Bicyclists and Pedestrians Toolkit, which provides a starting point for anyone looking to plan a bikeable and walkable community. It lists potential community improvements that can help create a safer community with the Safe System Approach.

Safe System Approach to Road Safety:

The Safe System Approach focuses on saving lives, with the understanding that humans...

Traffic conflict can be identified by the presence of evasive actions or the amount of temporal (spatial) proximity measures like time-to-collision (TTC). However, it is not enough to use only one kind of measures in some scenarios and it is hard to set a threshold for those measures. This paper proposed a method to identify traffic conflict by learning the representation of TTC and driver maneuver profiles with deep unsupervised learning and clustering the representations into traffic conflict and non-conflict clusters. We first trained a transformer encoder to encode sequences of...

New research brief explores the impacts of pluralistic ignorance on traffic safety perceptions

At the heart of active transportation systems are the people that use them. In a new research brief, Peer Influence and Perceptions of Safety, UC Berkeley SafeTREC's Graduate Student Researcher Aqshems Nichols and Co-Director Jill F. Cooper discuss the importance of considering perceptions in traffic safety analyses and the potential for investigating how a psychological phenomenon known as pluralistic ignorance could be shaping those perceptions.

Pluralistic ignorance is a "...
