February 15, 2023

On February 9, 2023, SafeTREC Researcher Julia Griswold discussed the tragic trend of hit-and-run fatalities for a CBS Sacramento news story about a hit-and-runVideo still of the NHTSA 2020 hit-and-run statistics in Modesto, California with correspondent Ashley Sharp. "It comes at a time when those fatal hit-and-runs are actually becoming more common" noted Sharp,  who also shared that according to the latest 2020 data, 70% of hit-and-run deaths involve either a pedestrian or bicyclist, and that one in four pedestrian deaths in 2020 was a hit-and-run.

Griswold, referencing a SafeTREC study on factors associated with hit-and-run pedestrian fatalities, shared that the research showed that driving under the influence of alcohol or without a license were among the leading driver factors associated with an increased risk of hit-and-run. She also noted the systemic traffic safety issues that can be addressed such as slower speed limits in high traffic areas. Watch the full story at CBS News.
