Research project to inform future speed-limit-setting in California
In April, 2024 SafeTREC Director Julia Griswold was awarded a new contract, "Developing a Safe System Approach to Setting Speed Limits: Phase II" with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
The objective of this research project is to develop preliminary technical requirements for a Safe System approach to setting speed limits in California. In the previous phase of the research, New Zealand’s approach was identified as appropriate for implementation in California. The technical requirements include developing a context-sensitive street category framework for speed limit setting, determining safe and appropriate speed limits for each category, and identifying an appropriate infrastructure risk assessment methodology, all of which will inform future speed-limit-setting in California.
