"Funding pedestrian and bicycle safety" peer exchange on January 18

January 4, 2023

My community is energized about pedestrian and bicycle safety! Where do we go from here? A 2023 Peer Exchange Series"

Once again, we are proud to host our three-part Peer Exchange program! The series supports communities as they work to implement pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety programming and improvements. All meetings will take place Wednesdays at 11am PT.  We invite participants who were involved in a pedestrian or bicycle safety workshop hosted by SafeTREC and Cal Walks via the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) program and the Comunidades Activas y Seguras (CAyS) program in the past few years to join us to share your successes and challenges, and hear about best practices from your peers and colleagues.

The 2023 Peer Exchange Series

Funding pedestrian and bicycle safety

Wednesday, January 18, 2023 | 11am - 12pm PT

This session will cover raising funds to support safety programs, improvements, and initiatives. Obtaining funding for active transportation projects is generally a necessity for any community or governmental agency. For some, grant writing and management is an everyday part of their job, while for others, it is new and intimidating. This peer exchange will focus on how to develop problem definitions, scopes, and budgets to fund your active transportation projects. It will feature a brief overview by Christine Viterelli, City of Arvin Grants Manager, and Germán Quiñonez, Neighborhood Development Director with Every Neighborhood Partnership in Fresno. The rest of the hour will provide participants with the opportunity to share their experiences and ask questions of their colleagues.

As part of the discussion among participants, we may cover additional questions such as:

  • How do you and your organization decide which grants to pursue?

  • What are your organization’s biggest barriers to applying for grants? How have you overcome them?

  • What lessons have you learned from applying for and implementing grants?

  • Do you have a history of partnering with others on grants?

Media framing and advocacy

Wednesday, February 1, 2023 | 11am - 12pm PT

The second session will cover attracting news media and framing pedestrian and bike mobility, the Safe System Approach, and reporting of crashes.

Safe Routes to Parks

Wednesday, February 15, 2023 | 11am - 12pm PT

The third session will cover promoting safe and active routes to parks and green spaces in urban and rural neighborhoods.
