UC Berkeley SafeTREC has launched our new California Autonomous Vehicle Crash Dashboard, which provides a public resource to explore autonomous vehicle crash data reported in California. The data provided includes crashes from July 2021 onwards, reported under the requirements of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Standing General Order (SGO).
The dashboard, funded by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (CA DMV), offers an accessible way for the public to better understand the safety performance of this emerging technology as autonomous vehicle (AV) operations continue to expand throughout California.
The dashboard summarizes key information on reported AV crashes, including:

The number of AV crashes over time
-
Injury severity in reported crashes
-
Types of parties involved in crashes
-
Autonomous vehicle pre-crash movements

Geographic locations of crashes
Interactive visualizations allow users to explore crash trends and patterns across California , providing transparency into autonomous vehicle operations and safety outcomes. Although the dashboard is still in its early stages, its value is expected to grow alongside the expansion of autonomous vehicle operations in California. As more data becomes available, the dashboard will serve as an increasingly important resource for keeping the public informed and supporting evidence-based conversations about AV safety.
For Fiona Norton, research data analyst at SafeTREC, the project has been particularly rewarding because it sits at the intersection of emerging technology, public interest, and transportation safety. “There is a strong desire from both the public and state agencies to better understand the autonomous vehicle landscape,” Norton said. “This is meant for that purpose exactly. I am able to work with data that has never before been used for this purpose and that is continuously shifting as the state adopts and adjusts to this new technology. I enjoy being at the forefront of these changes and working with the team to figure out the most useful ways to summarize data and visualize these autonomous vehicle crashes.”
