UC Berkeley SafeTREC has launched the California Active Transportation Data Portal (CAT Data Portal), a platform to collect, store, and visualize bicyclist, pedestrian, wheelchair, and other micromobility device volume counts across California.
The data portal is designed to:
-
Support the data collection and reporting requirements of the Active Transportation Program (ATP)
-
Provide useful data processing capabilities, like automated quality checks and estimation of annual average daily traffic (AADT)
-
Provide an open data set for researchers interested in analyzing trends in bicycle and pedestrian trips, safety, and mode shift
-
Support active transportation planning by providing a “one-stop-shop" of data commonly used in active transportation planning
The counts displayed in the data portal are provided by transportation agencies throughout California, where data has been collected by automated or human counters. Migrated from Southern California Association of Governments’ (SCAG) Active Transportation Database (ATDB), data from 23 agencies is available to view in the data portal, amounting to over 736,000 counts of pedestrians, bicyclists, and micromobility users.
Users can create a free account and use the portal as a Guest, Counter, or Agency Admin. Guests can browse and download data, and Counters can work with agencies to collect counts. Agency Admins work on behalf of agencies to create/manage count studies and locations, enter and approve count data, and create count assignments.
Visit the CAT Data Portal website here, and for more information on how to use the data portal, view the tutorial. If you are an agency interested in sharing your count data with us, please contact catdataportal@berkeley.edu
Keep an eye out for future improvements over the coming months, including addition of intersection counts.
